TERRA DEL SOLE FORTRESS
FORTRESS CITYThis small village was projected as a “fortress town” and not only as a stronghold, so this is currently a wonderful model of small Renaissance town that visitors can admire throughout the year being really fascinated by the architecture of its buildings.
The town was built by Caterina Sforza’s nephew Cosimo de’ Medici, the Grand Duke of Tuscany, and is one of the few urban places with a foundation day: 8 December 1564.
Most of the palaces are made of pietra serena and the perfection of the buildings proportions as well as the esthetical model of the project are the main features of this “ideal town” created by Cosimo according to the Renaissance values.
Terra del Sole was well known also as the Tuscany’s granary as Cosimo used to preserve here in the arsenal and warehouses the wheat stock produced in Romagna.
